Community Facilities & Recreation

Elfin Forest and Harmony Grove are home to four major community facilities that serve as important gathering places and resources for residents. These facilities provide essential services, support community events and recreation, and help foster the strong sense of connection and rural community character that defines the area.

ELFIN FOREST FIRE STATION

Located in the heart of the community at 20223 Elfin Forest Road, our local fire station is home to the Rancho Santa Fe Fire Department and serves as an important gathering place for residents.

The station provides a central location for community meetings, neighborhood events, and celebrations throughout the year. Residents gather here for regularly scheduled community meetings, the Annual Independence Day Parade and Picnic, and many other holiday and community traditions.

Beyond its role in emergency services, the fire station has become a valued part of Elfin Forest's community identity—a place where neighbors come together, connect, and celebrate the unique spirit of our rural community.

HIKING TRAILS

Elfin Forest is home to more than 23 miles of private trails, along with one public trail that extends approximately one mile south from Questhaven Retreat along Questhaven Road.

These trails are a treasured part of our rural community and are maintained through the dedication of local residents, the Town Council Trails Committee, and, in some cases, The Escondido Creek Conservancy.

The continued care and stewardship of these trails reflect the community's commitment to preserving access to open space while maintaining the natural beauty and rural character of Elfin Forest.

ELFIN FOREST RECREATIONAL RESERVE AND SUSAN VARTY INTERPRETIVE CENTER

The Elfin Forest Recreational Reserve is a spectacular 750-acre open space park and recreational area developed by the Olivenhain Municipal Water District (OMWD) in cooperation with the U.S. Department of the Interior’s Bureau of Land Management.

The Reserve offers approximately 17 miles of trails for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding, along with picnic areas, scenic overlooks, and opportunities to enjoy the area's unique natural beauty. The thoughtfully designed Susan Varty Interpretive Center provides visitors with educational exhibits and information about the history, wildlife, and environment of the Reserve.

The entrance and parking area are located on Harmony Grove Road. The Reserve is open daily from 8:00 a.m. until one-half hour before sunset.

Visitor Guidelines:

  • Dogs are permitted but must remain on leash. Please remember to pick up after your pet.

  • Fires, smoking, and firearms are prohibited.

  • Trail maps and educational materials are available at the Reserve.

  • Groups of eight or more people, groups of eight or more horses, or groups with four or more vehicles must obtain a permit before visiting.

FIREWISE GARDEN

The Fire Wise Garden was created following the 1996 fire as a demonstration of how thoughtful landscaping can help protect homes in a high fire-risk environment.

Former Elfin Forest resident Nils Lunnerdal was a passionate advocate for fire-safe landscaping, and his efforts have helped homeowners throughout San Diego County create beautiful, water-wise landscapes designed with wildfire safety in mind.

Located next to the Elfin Forest Fire Station, this living exhibit demonstrates practical techniques for reducing wildfire risk while maintaining attractive and sustainable gardens. It shows that a landscape can be beautiful, interesting, drought-tolerant, and fire-conscious at the same time.

The Fire Wise Garden has been recognized beyond the local community and has been featured in numerous magazines and landscaping publications, serving as an example of how thoughtful design can improve both safety and quality of life.

QUESTHAVEN RETREAT

Elfin Forest is home to the historic Questhaven Retreat, a place that has been part of the community landscape for many decades.

According to the Retreat's leaders, “The Questhaven Retreat was founded in 1940 and has been in continuous use as a non-denominational Christian retreat and training school for students who seek the universal way of Christian discipleship.”

The Retreat has served as a place for spiritual reflection, learning, and community gatherings, and remains an important part of the cultural and historical fabric of Elfin Forest.
